RETURNING THE FAVOR

The judge strode out onto the sand, a pair of guards behind her. Laran tried not to lean up against the cage, but failed. At some point, Daisy leapt the wall and appeared next to him, as if by magic. She held him upright, preserving a modicum of his dignity.

The judge waited for the crowd to quiet down a bit before declaring, “I hear by proclaim Laran Glory Seeker the victor of the trial by talent and innocent of all charges.”

He dismissed the notices as the crowd erupted, pounding and thumping amid their cheers. Laran was their David to Master Rowan’s goliath, and everyone loved an underdog. He’d taught those Mechanists a lesson he hoped they’d never forget. The judge patiently waited for the noise to shrink to a dull roar.

“You’ve gained the right to form your own guild of mechanists, Laran Glory Seeker,” she said, stepping closer to be heard.

“You can just call me Laran, you know.”

“Be careful, though,” she said, ignoring his interjection. “You’ve made a friend of the people but an enemy of a powerful guild.”

“Fuck them,” Daisy said, leading him out of the arena. Laran agreed wholeheartedly.

As soon as they got out of the arena, he accepted his new level and felt all his pain fade away. He’d never totally get used to that feeling. Laran broke with his pattern and put his attribute point in Constitution and his bonus into Health. Almost dying sucked, and he’d rather not do it as often.

They made their way back to the Glory Days, to a packed house and a table full of free drinks. Ragar toasted his victory while everyone cheered. He’d asked around about the older warrior and learned the man likely had the highest level of any glory seeker in the inn. He’d retired from adventuring a couple years back, content to spend his days drinking and telling tales.

After shaking everyone’s hands and getting enough thumps on the back that he thought he might need more healing, they let him sit and drink. With a moment to think, he addressed his new perks on his forearm display.
